OKL4 Microkernels are a family of
second-generation microkernels based on the
original designs and implementations by Jochen
Liedtke. Originally implemented in highly tuned
i386-specific assembly language code, the API has
seen extensive development in a number of
directions, both in achieving a higher grade of
platform independence and also in improving
security, isolation, and robustness. There have
been various re-implementations of the original
binary kernel interface and its higher level
successors, including L4Ka::Pistachio, L4/MIPS,
and Fiasco. For this reason, the name L4 now
applies to the whole microkernel family including
the L4 kernel interface and its different versions.

Thix is an almost complete implementation of the POSIX.1 standard (IEEE Std 1003.1-1988). It is a UNIX-like kernel with many features real operating systems have: virtual memory, demand paging, protection, swapping, etc. The Thix Operating System is fully functional at this time, and many free software packages have been succesfully compiled/run under it, including development tools such as the GNU C/C++ Compiler suite. However, there is no networking support and the only drivers available are for floppy disks, (E)IDE hard disks, printers, virtual terminals, mem, kmem and null.

Open Distributed Data Acquisition System Linux is a mini distribution of GNU/Linux intended for use on the ODDAS project. It contains a shell and some basic commands plus servers for HTTP, FTP and telnet. It also includes the capability to perform syslog over the network, and contains a very simple mail program which allows alerts to be forwarded across the network. The whole thing squeezes into about 3M of flash on an Intel [3-6]86 processor.
