daemon turns other processes into daemons. There are many tedious tasks that need to be performed to correctly set up a daemon process; daemon performs these tasks for other processes. This is useful for writing daemons in languages other than C, C++, or Perl (e.g. sh, Java). If you want to write daemons in languages that can link against C functions (e.g. C, C++), see libslack, which contains the core functionality of daemon.

This release fixes two security bugs relating to
not following symlinks when checking if it was
safe to read the configuration file, and not
clearing supplmentary groups when user[.group] was
specified. Other changes include optional
arguments to -d and -v (default to 1), debug
levels changed to 8/9 or 1/2, a fix for a problem
with -n and -u options which, when used together,
failed to unlink pidfiles, support for root and
user pidfiles in seperate directories, and Red
Hat, Debian, and Solaris packages are now available.
