Tks, Seiji and David, for your replies.

"Sticky bits" are news to me.
(Here<http://www.osxfaq.com/Tutorials/LearningCenter/AdvancedUnix/ugp2/index.ws>,
for the record, is the source of *all* of my info about them.)

You are asking *me*, I take it, whether it's OK to turn off the sticky
bit?... Assuming so, well, yes, why not?... No one else will be using this
other than I, so I don't see why not.

Let me try that.

OK, when I 'ls -ald' Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/bin/ --
Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/bin/emacs
returns "Not a directory" - I get:
drwxr-xr-x 35 [user] admin 1190 Jun 7 06:26 .

This is on my *installed* version. I.e., the sticky bit's not set.

What am I missing?...

Many tks,
Matthew

Oh, and for the record, USB drives seem to be formatted FAT32 by default -
so that they can be used on both OSX and WinXP machines. I have not
reformatted mine, so assume it's FAT32.
