Yes, that's the problem, as I mentioned - nothing displays for bold.   
Examine to the right of the ** on the status line in my screenshot;  
you can see gray dots on the baseline where the font is supposed to  
render.

Hum, maybe I need to turn this off.  Where do I find the Carbon elisp  
files?

I think the real problem is that my monitor is too small :-)  I need  
a nice big LCD so I can use an antialiased font as you do.
