darkstat is an ntop-workalike network statistics gatherer. It runs as a background process on a cable or DSL router, uses libpcap to capture network traffic, and has a Web interface that serves up reports of statistics such as data transferred by host, port, and protocol. It also has a neat bandwidth usage graph.

Calamaris parses the logfiles of a wide variety of Web proxy servers and generates reports about peak-usage, request-methods, status-report of incoming and outgoing requests, second and top-level destinations, content-types, and performance.

L7-filter is a packet classifier for Netfilter that identifies packets based on application layer (OSI layer 7) data. This means that it is able to classify packets as HTTP, FTP, Gnucleus, Kazaa, etc., regardless of ports. It complements existing matches that classify based on port numbers, packet length, TOS bits, and so on. Combined with Linux QoS, it allows for full layer 7 packet shaping.

procps is a package of utilities which includes ps, vmstat, top, w, skill, snice, pgrep, pkill, free, sysctl, pmap, uptime, and kill. These utilities report what is running, who is logged in, how long the system has been running, and what is using up memory. They can be used to kill processes and change run-time kernel configuration values.

IPTraf is an ncurses-based IP LAN monitor that generates various network statistics including TCP info, UDP counts, ICMP and OSPF information, Ethernet load info, node stats, IP checksum errors, and others.

Just For Fun Network Management System is a PHP-based network management system that features an integrated syslog, Tacacs, TFTP configuration downloading, SNMP polling, SNMP traps, journalling, auto-discovery, performance graphs (RRD), SLAs, and a lot more. It uses MySQL or PostgreSQL as the backend and works under Linux and Windows.

Kismet is an 802.11 layer 2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. It will work with any wireless card which supports raw monitoring (rfmon) mode, and can sniff 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11n traffic (device drivers permitting). It identifies networks by passively collecting packets and detecting standard named networks, detecting (and given time, decloaking) hidden networks, and inferring the presence of non-beaconing networks via data traffic.

x11vnc allows one to remotely view and interact with real X displays (i.e. a display corresponding to a physical monitor, keyboard, and mouse) with any VNC viewer. It is designed to be compatible with all Unix variants and Mac OS X, and depends on a small set of standard libraries. It supports SSL/TLS and VeNCrypt encryption, Unix password logins, single port access, Zeroconf, file transfer, and UltraVNC extensions. It is part of the LibVNCServer project.

An intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows the construction of dashboards with graphs, pie charts, etc., while the thresholds functionality includes emails and user defined scripts. Monitored data can be archived in a SQL database by both the GUI and the companion daemon, so that complete history over time can be made available from Web pages or common spreadsheet software. It can even be used for future behavior prediction or capacity planning, from the included predictor tool, based on powerful statistical methods and artificial neural networks.
