FIGlet is a program for making large letters out of ordinary text. It prints its input using large characters made up of ordinary screen characters. FIGlet output is generally reminiscent of the sort of "signatures" many people like to put at the end of email and UseNet messages. It is also reminiscent of the output of some banner programs, although it is oriented normally, not sideways.

TTX is a tool to convert OpenType and TrueType
fonts to and from XML. FontTools is a Python
library for manipulating fonts. It supports
TrueType, OpenType, AFM, (to an extent) Type 1,
and some Mac-specific formats.

FONTpage is a utility for viewing, managing, and generating images of fonts. It can install and delete per-user fonts as well as (when run as root) system-wide fonts. It displays fonts, has a full alpha-numeric popup window, and allows you to change the font size and color, background color, font face, bold, and italics. It also has the ability to input the text to be displayed, which you can choose to save as a PNG file. It is handy to view fonts and styles quickly, or to make "logo" graphics. fntsample is a program for making font samples
that show Unicode coverage of the font. The
samples are similar in appearance to Unicode
charts. Samples can be saved as PDF or PostScript
files.

fcbanner is a variant on the banner program that uses
fontconfig and Freetype to draw its characters. Thus, it can
easily draw using various fonts -- any font you can get in
Gnome or Mozilla, for example -- and handles non-ASCII
characters if they are present in the font.

Xcyr-fonts is a package of Cyrillic screen fonts for X, suitable for Belorussian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Russian (new and old orthography), Serbian, Ukrainian languages. They are encoded using a new map KOI8-C that coincides with the standard KOI8-(R,U) in the letters area but adds more Cyrillic letters (all of ISO8859-5 plus Yat', Fita, Izhitsa) and some typographic symbols (mostly from CP-1251). The font set is a fully compatible superset of the standard XFree86 Russian Cyrillic fonts, with numerous changes to improve quality.

Termentis is a bitmap terminal font created for
both readability and to fit as many terminals as
possible on a 1680 wide display. It is available
in 14 and 12 point.

Alphabet Soup is a project which attempts to determine a number of things about the shapes of letters in several different writing systems. First, it hypothesizes a set of basic building blocks that all letters are built up from. Second, it hypothesizes a set of rules, a grammar or syntax, which defines how those pieces combine to make different letters. It can generate individual letters, randomize letters in an input string to create weird but readable text, or generate random strings of symbols.
